How many of you have your own hosts?

Depends on your target market. If the margins are high enough to support having your own H/W then of course it's nicer to have full control of the environment.  We own all our hardware, including network layer, in caged environments with our own offices & staff inside the DC also.

    Webhostingtalk / Inet Interactive SOLD!

Increasing prices might get rid of some of the fly by night hosts, and I'm a-ok with that. Bring it on.

Stay away from Damien and his company SupremeBytes. (my review)

No opinion here other than always get a long term contract if you want a long term service. Lesson learned hopefully.

Things to consider when choosing Colocation?

Confirm how much remote hands costs will be at various times of day and on holidays. Sometimes using non hotswap servers can incur extra charges, for example a lot of providers (us included) offer courtesy hands for hot swap items (drives, psus, etc). It seems you don't have internal ipmi/kvm...

    Most popular location for VPS?

Dallas, LA, Seattle, NYC are chosen most often simply because they're the major peering hubs for their geographical regions. For instance most traffic going east to west in the USA will go through Dallas or Chicago. Most traffic going to the EU will go out via NYC. Most traffic going to Asia...

    8x E3-1271 v3 Cluster, 32GB RAM, 256GB SSD/2TB SATA, A+B Power $899

I don't want to get into s**t tossing, but my guess on config from a provider being secretive would be; single proc e3 pizza box machines, e.g. no redundant psu, no hot swap drives, and single SSD. Most providers have tons of those single psu, non hotswap, pizza box servers laying around, so the...

    8x E3-1271 v3 Cluster, 32GB RAM, 256GB SSD/2TB SATA, A+B Power $899

Thanks. The system supports "1x PCI-E 3.0 x8 and 1x Micro-LP" per node so a RAID card can be added if desired. Uses I had in mind were more along the lines of cluster based RAID, hence portable IPs and such to allow for instant failover etc. Per node RAID is definitely possible either with S/W...

Gopcn.com provides new servers with only 20% down when you colo with us, they take the rest of the payment by card or paypal over 12 months. It works out to being a really good deal. Thanks for considering expanding with us.
