How do providers manage their hardware?

Some things I've always wondered about with providers and how they run their operations.   My background is big IT - my employers have typically owned their own DCs, have local sysadmins in each site, big support contracts, etc.  So I've done a lot of datacenter-oriented work, just not with...

    Free Hosted Ghost

My employer sent me to the hinterlands of Wisconsin for a week - it's -17F (-27C) here, so I've had plenty of time to work on take-over-the-world schemes in my hotel room. Following on to the recreating Gatsby.im thread, I read up a bit on Ghost.  What would it take to do something similar to...

    Recreating Gatsby.im

When I first saw Gatsby (@ElliotJ), I had two impressions:    (1) That's a really nice site design, and  (2) That's a great idea - wish I'd thought of it.   Now that it's gone, last night I was thinking about what it would take to create something similar.   So What Do you Need?  ...

This domain price seems slightly high to me...

    Whatever happened to Xen?

It's all but vanished from the vps market, but big cloud providers (AWS, Azure, etc) use it.

Is there a way to automate kvm re/installs?

I love the pushbutton reinit of ovz. Is there a way to do something similar for kvm? Other than a custom iso or a homegrown "run this script after manually installing OS" sort of thing.

    BuyVM Legal Defense Fund? LOL

This is so lame and desperate...ChicagoVPS is begging Solus to sue BuyVM over Stallion.

Just curious. See the app offer whenever I come here on iOS.

What do you think of Ghost (blogging platform)

Someone mentioned Ghost to me and I checked out their site.  It's "just blogging" and looks slick.   There's a video here:  https://ghost.org/features/ The owner/founder looks like kind of a goof to me and I didn't like his presentation: He says blogs are revolutionary and empowering and have...

    Jean Claude van Who?

Some of you may have been impressed by Jean Claude van Damme's "epic split":   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7FIvfx5J10   However, Chuck Norris was not:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFJeaAq5Mv4

OK, which one of you stole my credit card...

Got a call from my bank today - one of my credit card numbers was apparently stolen and the thief ran up a bunch of charges, all of which my bank declined. Funny thing is that the thief apparently used it mostly to sign up for VPS services.  Not with any provider here or anyone I've ever used...

    Securing VNC (fail2ban?)

I use VNC so I can run some desktop apps on a VPS (chiefly Vuze and Firefox).  I'm running Debian and use vnc4server. Unfortunately, VNC is limited to an 8-character password.  And I sometimes login and find "too many security failures" which means someone has been knocking. I could setup...

    Back Door in D-Link Routers

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/10/13/dlink_routers_have_admin_backdoor/ I think you'd have to be a bit daffy to expose your admin interface over the WAN port - I don't know about D-Link's native firmware, but Tomato, DD-WRT, OpenWRT, etc. will let you turn it off. But even still...

    IOS 7. Meh.

That pretty much sums up my take. Change for change sake. Makes things harder to read.  Sort of like Microsoft did with Office 2013 vs Office 2010 - everything's skinny-fonted, lack of contrast. Fisher-Price icons.   I'm running it on a 4S.  The only reason I have an iPhone is that it's...

I'm being STOLEN FROM! (not really - what is reasonable kvm steal %)

Running top on a kvm vps, there is a statistic called "st %" which I read is the time "stolen" from my VPS.  Or more precisely, "waits for a real CPU while the hypervisor is servicing another virtual processor".   So does that mean, "your VPS was assigned 2 virtual processors (in my kvm's...

Kimsufi is fast to a VPS, glacial to home. Why?

I was whining about my Kimsufi transfer speed in another thread.   At the moment, I'm seeing 10KB/sec and 6KB/sec in two separate FTP connections, connecting from my home (Portland, OR, USA) .  I just rebooted the kimsufi and there's nothing running on it of note - load average is .07 and...

Running a TOR Relay, Part 2

Thanks for all the advice in my previous thread.  I realized I had an affiliate credit with 6sync and decided to spin up a TOR relay there.  I have a spare OvZ at BuyVM as well so maybe I'll run two. So the 6sync box is 512MB, 2 cores, 2TB BW. Here is how I configured my torrc (thanks to Nyr...

SecureDragon Changes Up Their Bandwidth Pricing

Got an email from SD that they've changed up their pricing. For OvZ, I notice they're provisioning a lot less BW, though the email says it's sufficient to satisfy 90% of their customers.  That doesn't surprise me, really - I doubt most people use the BW they pay for. Some before/after: 32MB...

How big a VPS for a TOR relay? (BuyVM OvZ or KVM)

Thinking of running a TOR relay (not exit node) for general make-the-world-a-better-place purposes. - How big a VPS does one need to do this?  Disk doesn't matter but I'm wondering about CPU and RAM.   - Seems like KVM is perhaps a better choice than OvZ because you have more control over the...
