Free Public DNS resolver list (public DNS servers)

Now that Level 3 supposedly is capturing and redirecting folks to their search monetization page on failed lookups, thought it was a good time to introduce other DNS resolver / DNS server options. Opennic - http://www.opennicproject.org/ Different locations all over.  Ran by members.  Many...

Copy and Paste Tablet to Desktop

Like many folks these days, I am wandering around with a stack of devices.   When I have to debug a broken server/computer I end up toting a tablet and smartphone. Now, often I have notes or some research on the tablet or phone and rather than bastard type the commands and deal with that...

Who uses Stripe for payments? Beware, they seem to not validate cards.

Who around here is using Stripe (stripe.com) for card transactions? Beware, while Stripe claims PCI-compliance and to be all secure, they fail to even do basic live authentication on accounts presented. I would say no way, not true had I not seen 4+ examples of this utter failure this morning...

    Rsync limiting bandwidth - howto

If you are like most of us, rsync is a tool you use far too much. One issue I run into from time to time is rsync saturating a connection and reducing performance of a network for users (high CPU load). Rsync has a built in CLI switch for regulating  bandwidth usage: --bwlimit=5000...

NodeDeploy, one of the low price companies offering out of the UK and part of the whole UK DDoS'ing victim list earlier this year, has been sold or merged. The new owner is Xavvo.    That company is owned by our very own MartinD, a moderator here on vpsBoard. The talk about NodeDeploy...

No firewall? Meet ufw the easiest firewall ever

For long I've been running Debian on VPS instance wide open or with a stack of iptables commands.   Been getting smacked by some bad traffic lately and after debugging all that, thought it was time for something a bit tidier and easier to deal with.  Yes iptables rocks, but it's a long learning...

What are you doing...
