    Voice chat room

Thanks, yes, I'd want a minimal feature set, voice and text (or voice without text) is fine, in particular I really want no GUI on the client (command line only).  I don't need SIP or anything like that.  I really want to use it to talk to just one or two other people (family members) and I'd...

    Voice chat room

Hmm, mumble looks promising, it's already in the debian repo, but the client is very bloated, and I don't see where to download the source code.  Downloading from mumble.com also requires agreeing to some kind of service agreement. I'm thinking that maybe encryption in the voip software isn't...

    [Mod Move] Updating Reviews?

HalfEatenPie here!  Split these posts from because it was deviating away from the initial discussion!  ======================================= Do we really need these monthly updates of every one of your vps's in the review threads?  How about if we have a separate thread or section for...

positive ssl not working in firefox.

You have to configure your server with two certificates, the end user certificate for your site that was issued to you, and an intermediate certificate that signs your end user cert.  The intermediate cert is signed by a trusted root cert built into browsers.  See part about intermediate cert...

    Voice chat room

Yeah, I don't much have any interest in voice chat with a bunch of strangers, and would much rather use irc than something run by some company.  I do like the vpsboard freenode channel most of the time.  And I've been wondering for a while how to set up a voice chat for personal use with my...

    Thinking about not using paypal.

By direct credit card I guess I misspoke, I just meant I use my credit card directly in the host's invoice page without having to enroll another account with some intermediary like Paypal.  With smaller providers this type of payment is usually handled by a payment handler like Stripe or even...

    Thinking about not using paypal.

As a user (not a seller), I try to avoid Paypal and always want to use a direct credit card if I can, or am happy to pay by money order (guaranteeing that the seller gets the money).  I'm not personally a Bitcoin user but am ok with it in principle.  Why does anyone use Paypal as an alternative...

Can I transfer a BuyVM Yearly?

See https://my.frantech.ca/tos.php section 4,2) Service Transfer. If you just cancel a vps with unused time, your account gets a credit that you can use later for more services, but as I remember they don't like to issue actual refunds in that situation.  Their practice if someone insisted on a...

Linode switches to hourly billing with monthly caps...

Any idea how the cpu speed of their "8 core" 0.24/hour server compares with an E3-1245v2? Uptano.com has something comparable to the Linode offer but that's an actual single tenant server, that seems more attractive.  However, it's apparently a dual L54xx so it's only about the same speed as a...

Distribute task or commands with bash to different workers

What exactly are you trying to do?  If you just want to run a bunch of commands in parallel (including on different hosts), GNU Parallel is the simplest way, I've found.  For fancier queuing schemes I've never used any of the MQ things but have used Redis, which is pretty well set up for that.

Might wanna recompile or patch that OpenSSL, buddy (4/7/2014)

The new certificate is misconfigured so it throws error dialogs when you visit the site.  It's supposed to be chained with an intermediate certificate that probably came with it in the email from the CA, but otherwise should be available on the CA website someplace. Edit: it's fixed now.  Some...

Might wanna recompile or patch that OpenSSL, buddy (4/7/2014)

There is also insecurity on the client side, so you have to upgrade that too, not just the server, if you're using openssl clients for something.

    Hiring Senior Software Engineer/Designer

Yeah, good point, I thought a full stack developer did client and server side programming and (some) web design, but was less involved in operations than devops (which is mostly focused on the back end).  Presumably Nick does need front end stuff too.  I wasn't thinking about that because I'm...

    Hiring Senior Software Engineer/Designer

Also, the skill set you're looking for is called "devops" (development and operations).  They need knowledge of systems and network programming, deployment tools, troubleshooting and fixing stuff, but they don't really need a CS background.  I agree with Daniel and also would say it's best to...

    Hiring Senior Software Engineer/Designer

In a small company, the CTO writes code and puts out fires on the servers just like everyone else.  They have somewhat more managerial authority than a programmer, are involved in the business part of the company and in hiring, can make technology decisions and purchases, have a significant...

    Hiring Senior Software Engineer/Designer

This sounds like you need a CTO rather than a pure programmer, depending on what you are trying to do with the company.  [Edit: fixed mis-pasted quote]

Yes, checking for that (beyond some interview questions and whiteboard exercises) is the purpose of a paid tryout.

    Hiring Senior Software Engineer/Designer

I guarantee you that IBM and Microsoft don't ask people to do 1 day mini-projects for free.  It's pretty common for them to keep you in contractor hell for a long time (like years) and maybe they never actually hire you on staff, but at least you get paid for your work.

    Hiring Senior Software Engineer/Designer

I don't think you get it.  Yes you want to screen developers, but they also want to screen employers.  What you are suggesting will get you screened out by any developer who has been in the field for any length of time.  If you don't do a paid tryout it's ok to expect the person to do 1/2 day or...

    Hiring Senior Software Engineer/Designer

LOL, the developer is supposed to show commitment while the client shows none?  I don't mind doing 1 day of development for a company but I'd expect to get paid for it (these tryout engagements have tended to be around 2 weeks, and billed at around 1.5x-2x the person's expected fulltime salary...
