Anonymous Web-host shut down, owner arrested; Tor users compromised by Javascript exploit

Thanks for the i2p pointer :) I am contemplating working on local wifi based connectivity --- neighborhood / city level shared network.  Tightly limited content and outlets to the "internet".      Seems to be a big need for local networks for people to communicate online while being off-net...

    Stale commands in htop?

Backup script there looks fine. Pretty straight forward. What process is left lingering?  rsync?

Quick Packet - Dual Intel Xeon L5420 - Dell CS24-SC - Dedicated Server Review

Totally, colo hasn't continued to decline in pricing like dedicated, VPS, etc.   It's stuck at $100/U in most places.   There are a few bottom level offers but even those (and their are literally few) seem to be in the $50-65 range.   My days of colo'ing are coming to a close along with with...

Quick Packet - Dual Intel Xeon L5420 - Dell CS24-SC - Dedicated Server Review

Those larger SSDs are becoming rather affordable quickly.  Hopefully it continues :) Those 54xx differ very little between the E and L prefix.  The L is just a lower power window.  CPU performance isn't much different compared to the E versions. As for the $50 price point, yep, still is a...

Quick Packet - Dual Intel Xeon L5420 - Dell CS24-SC - Dedicated Server Review

The L5420's are still seriously powerful, especially for a virtualized server environment.  8 cores total and 16GB of RAM, that's a big box.  Single cores are still competitive with the latest blah blah E-whatevers. If disk IO is an issue skip the RAID and more drives (unless you need more disk...

    Stale commands in htop?

No this isn't normal. I run a bunch of cron jobs, but am a novice still :) Biggest issue I have and likely relates is the underlying script can/will fail.  For instance I have a cron job that does recording of streams.  That is accomplished via a popular third party commandline tool.   At...

Anonymous Web-host shut down, owner arrested; Tor users compromised by Javascript exploit

PS: I use to be a fan of ToR until I heard Applebaum talk and played follow the money. The entities behind ToR financially aren't folks I'd be trusting with anything (i.e. Google and US Defense).   ToR is a honeypot and was designed to be.    Gives edgy people a false sense of security and gets...

Anonymous Web-host shut down, owner arrested; Tor users compromised by Javascript exploit

Whatever yanks the opiated masses heart strings is what the governments pushes as cover cause.  Oh that child porn, it's the end of humanity.  Never mind the mass pedophilia within the US government, contractors and top colleagues abroad. Yeah, sure, child porn isn't right and isn't anything I...

    Small HTTP proxy (+ SOCKS)

Bouncer seems to have issues with modern sites per se.   Getting lots of incomplete page loads. Polipo was interesting for caching mainly.    Probably headed back to Squid since it has bunch of features, privacy features, etc.  It's a bear to config optimally, but works pretty good. I...

Anonymous Web-host shut down, owner arrested; Tor users compromised by Javascript exploit

Well, yet another major hacking incident involving United States nazi police forces. This time, ToR - The Onion Router has been massively compromised via a javascript exploit that calls home to the feds. The entire situation is wrapped up in the illusion of the good guys (FBI) pursuing child...

    Small HTTP proxy (+ SOCKS)

Well, finally took the polipo plunge. Polipo works, but is very flaky.    Incomplete page loads, images that are broken/bad and most troubling --- random crashes of the daemon. That's with the current version shipped in Debian 7.

    Home security systems?

Lots of SimpliSafe promo on this thread.  Interesting systems, but the hardware you have to buy isn't low cost enough - actually rather expensive all considering. I've tinkered with cameras here and there for a few years. Generally you want a pan and tilt camera with zoom functionality.  ...

    Rsync Error Code 22

Well it has been eons since I mucked with this rsync flag.   Basically it doesn't do a full compare of the local and remote files all at once.  It does it in chunks.    I use that flag all the time on small RAM servers where rsync throws all sorts of RAM related issues that are hard to debug...

    Looking for a VPS node

24/7 support.... good luck there....  That limits it usually to facility owners (i.e. companies who own their own datacenter and staff it).   Everyone else tends to have low level gophers fielding tickets except during business day. Uptime guarantees --- another nice thing to have.  Even the...

    New CC Hosts;

@mpkossen, still posting those offers for ServerMania and their many fronts I see....  SSDVPS --- http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/ssd-vps-7-2gb-ram-40gb-ssd-openvz-in-los-angeles/ LEB has become rather blah and snake oil salesmen clogged lately.
