Linking together multiple VPNs and with randomness?

The point you're missing here, is that part of the safety of Tor is in it not being a private connection. It works because you share the same relays with many, many other people, so individual traffic analysis becomes very hard. By setting up your own chain of VPNs, you're just making it a lot...

    Who is intensenode?

I received them as well (and they went straight to spam). Only used CVPS in a fairly distant past (via UGVPS), not GVH/123Systems, and not Crissic or Quadranet either. So, seems it comes from CVPS.

Looking for VPS in privacy oriented country.

I live in the Netherlands, and am closely involved in (and keeping tabs on) activism and privacy here. It is absolutely true, and the authorities give absolutely no fucks about what is legal for them to do and what isn't (see also the "hacking back" scandal, for example). There are absolutely no...

    Hetzner releases new VPS line

There's really no issue with /64s being handed out, nor is it necessarily "wasteful" (after all, IPv6 was designed with this kind of end user allocation in mind). It's apparently easier to route, and lets you run different applications on different IPs more easily. The whole point of IPv6 size...

What country is best for free speech laws?

That's unfortunately pretty much inevitable if your adversary is a government. Yet another reason people should think very, very carefully about what kind of government structures they tolerate, and whether representative democracy is really beneficial to society.

What country is best for free speech laws?

The short answer: None. If your threat model is a government/country: host it in a country that has the least cooperation treaties with the country or countries that you are planning on pissing off, and hope for the best. Purchase services anonymously, never connect from any IP that belongs to...

Crissic has been acquired by Quadranet

Curious - are they going to break rental contract, or simply not renewing the rent in accordance with contract terms? That could be the difference between it being questionable or it being plain illegal.

How To Force SSL Always Using HTACCESS

Don't use .htaccess unless you're on a shared hosting provider and have no other choice. It's slow (because there's lots of recursive stat calls for every pageload), and easy to mess up (accidentally removing it during deployment, etc.). Put it in your HTTPd configuration instead, in the...

Where do you host your ruby app *in the cloud* ?

I just wouldn't recommend PaaS providers at all ("cloud" is not really the right term to use here), as you lose complete control over the environment. As far as I know, for example, Heroku does not have a persistent filesystem, so you're going to often have to do weird things to get third-party...

Hetzner Adds 8-core ODROID-XU4 ARM Based Server Line

Scaleway also offers free servers for 30 minutes. Inspired by InstantServer, I'm sure :)

    12GB RAM Cloud Giveaway - Miami/LA Cloud VZ | 2GB RAM 75GB Disk Space 5 IPv4 $20/6months | 1G RAM 4I

I was more refering to maybe getting a free VPS if you refer people to them... but that works too :) To be fair, from the looks of it, that was a PM on WHT.

    12GB RAM Cloud Giveaway - Miami/LA Cloud VZ | 2GB RAM 75GB Disk Space 5 IPv4 $20/6months | 1G RAM 4I

Meh. Not so much a 'giveaway', as an affiliate program with uncertain payouts.

Nix - A Purely Functional Package Manager

I was pointed at the Nix package manager by somebody a few weeks ago... It completely removes the possibility of version conflicts, allows for non-root package installation, and so on. It works across distributions, too - they have their own Linux distro, but you can also install just the...

Looking for (urgent!) help on an archiving project for a few days

I suspect that if that were possible, it'd have been done already. Might be either technical or legal reasons, I don't know. It all hangs together with duct tape, but it's pretty effective duct tape :)

Looking for (urgent!) help on an archiving project for a few days

We use their infrastructure for long-term storage, and there's one person (Jason Scott) who's involved with both, but there's no formal association between the two. We're already offloading data to the Internet Archive, but unfortunately they have capacity limits, intake-wise... I believe that...

Looking for (urgent!) help on an archiving project for a few days

Oh, I guess you're using the VM image? If you're running it on a server, then the manual setup will run lighter (scroll down for distro-specific setup), and allow up to 20 concurrent threads.

Looking for (urgent!) help on an archiving project for a few days

Definitely. Thanks! Make sure to run it with 20 concurrent threads, though.
