Mozilla announces the death of unencrypted HTTP

From an "open web" perspective, that is absolutely "forcing", in the form of extortion. If you don't comply with this X, you won't get Y. Anyhow, my take on this: http://cryto.net/~joepie91/blog/2015/05/01/on-mozillas-forced-ssl/ TL;DR This is a bad idea, and many things need to be fixed...

    Ghost.org: where the money went

Having moved over to Node.js (after trying to move to Python as main language, and it not working out), it's probably the healthiest ecosystem I've run across. Semantic versioning almost across the board, very high average code quality, people are not afraid to refactor large amounts of code...

Why Don't Providers Do This One Simple Thing ... To Make More Money?

I can use my bank account to deposit money to my PayPal balance. Not sure if it's any different for CCs.

Why Don't Providers Do This One Simple Thing ... To Make More Money?

When I'm eg. going on a holiday, I usually just put in a ticket asking to pay ahead for a service. Most providers have no issue sending an invoice for a few months at once, in my experience.

Server and domain monitoring tool I made

Benchmarks please. If you consider choosing a database a "personal choice" rather than a technical decision, then that's a problem.

Server and domain monitoring tool I made

The 32-bits limit is dumb and purely a result of the design decisions made by the MongoDB developers (for "performance" - which as of yet is a completely unproven claim, as far as I am aware). Data loss was primarily because of poor default behaviour, and if the disregard for data integrity has...

Server and domain monitoring tool I made

I'd not recommend using MongoDB. is why.

    What browser are you using?

If Chrome blocks it as malware, it is almost certainly malware. It uses data from Safe Browsing. Most likely, the thing you were trying to download contained bundled crapware.

Looking for VPS in privacy oriented country.

Yes, that's what they use it for, but it is largely misguided. It's a lot of hype, very little substance. For starters, laws are just words - with increasing evidence that governments around the world are basically ignoring laws, it doesn't really matter how good the laws are, you're going to be...

Looking for VPS in privacy oriented country.

The problem is that no matter what host you use or where they are located, you still have absolutely no guarantee or way to check that they are indeed "privacy-friendly". It could be a meaningless marketing bulletpoint for all you know - and usually, it is.

What is your favorite forum / community software?

Try typing something, and then pausing for a while. In the bar below the editor, a 'saved at <date>' text will appear. After reloading the page, you can click that bar to restore your post (it's not automatic). ... and of course that has now stopped working again.

What is your favorite forum / community software?

The draft saving feature just started working for me like an hour ago. @MannDude did you fix something?

What is your favorite forum / community software?

The problem is that IPB doesn't use something like Markdown, so you can't do "proper" quotes unless you use IPBs own editor, unfortunately.

What is your favorite forum / community software?

Certainly not IPB. It ate my post twice yesterday because it doesn't save drafts, and breaks my form data recovery extension. XenForo and Discourse are nice.

"Definitely Possible" : Microsoft Considers Open Source Windows.

It's even worse than that. Due to kernel modifications, it is apparently not even possible to use ChromeOS driver builds on a regular Linux distro, which would be the source of aforementioned switching-to-a-real-distro issues. Whether you can install a 'real' distro depends on whether the...

Best coding language to know in 2015?

Okay, fuck IPB - it has now eaten my reply twice, doesn't save drafts, and even breaks my form data saving extension. I'm writing this in an external editor and copying it in - that means you won't have fancy IPB quotes, but e-mail style quotes instead.   --   > @vampireJ: It seems to be a...

"Definitely Possible" : Microsoft Considers Open Source Windows.

Professional users, sure. But that massive amount of people who dick around with media production in their spare time as a hobby? They do it on Windows, by and large.

"Definitely Possible" : Microsoft Considers Open Source Windows.

I am certainly not forgetting businesses, but perhaps I should've been more clear that I meant long-term reasons for Windows usage. Business software is not specific to Windows - it is often tailor-made, for whatever platform the business happens to be running on. In other words: in the...

"Definitely Possible" : Microsoft Considers Open Source Windows.

OS X is a BSD, actually. Other than being POSIX-y, OS X and Linux don't have terribly much in common.

Best coding language to know in 2015?

As an aside, I'd explicitly recommend against learning PHP. It's a terrible language, the ecosystem is rife with low-quality code and poor advice, and while it seems easy to write and deploy PHP, it's actually really hard to write and deploy PHP correctly.
