OS or projects that need mirrors or torrent seeding

Alpine can always use additional mirrors.  See: http://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/How_to_setup_a_Alpine_Linux_mirror for more information.

    Ubuntu Forums Hacked

It seems kinda obvious to me... ubuntuforums.org is a high traffic site, so if you're a skid and you want to show people how much of an alleged badass you are, it'd be a pretty good target.  Plus, there's the "lulz value" that skids enjoy so much.

Your new VPS is provisioned, what is the first thing you do once you connect?

We are debating adding the ability to preinstall a customer supplied keychain when they do an installation.  OVH does that on their servers, it's kind of a neat feature.

    New signature guidelines.

Out of curiosity, do images include Unicode pictographs, such as these?

How to gauge the quality of a provider's network

It's because HE is a really good one-hop transit provider for dumping you onto a peered ISP quickly, such as Cox or Comcast. Everyone peers with HE.

Latency monitoring of common DCs and hosts

As a general advisement, the BHS probe will be retired at some point between August 1 and August 31.  This is, of course, related to our pull-out from OVH.

    Redstation colocation?

Works for us, although their peerings to LINX and LoNAP are really congested at peak.  My understanding is that they are in the process of upgrading to a 100G coherent ring which should help a lot with that.

Need a router for the house.

Whatever you do, don't get the Netgear WNDR4000.  Someone recommended that to me, and I've been regretting it ever since. Some weekend project at some point is to get out this Cisco ASA5505 and Ubiquiti Networks AP I have and fix the home network up.  At some times, there's up to 15 devices on...

    Install OpenVZ on CentOS 6

Any panel that has a similar design to SolusVM will be equally dangerous security-wise.  The design is just total crap...

PayPal Mistakenly Credits Delaware Man’s Account with $92 Quadrillion Dollars

ACH batch transfer programs are always prepared by hand.  And, you don't want to know what happens when one of the receiving banks disagrees with the batch.  They have to redo the entire batch and resubmit...

Looking for Xen based Linux VPS

Well, there is this on their fine print: Also, looking at the routes I have to 91.194.91.215 (AS51167) it seems that they use Telia and Level3 for transit with a preference to Telia, at least from the routing table view we have at London. This may affect connectivity to the US negatively...

    Ubuntu Forums Hacked

Well, they are using vBulletin MD5 hashing.  So, I would just assume your password to be owned now, as IIRC that isn't even salted.  Or the salt is the same for all passwords.  Or something silly like that. Good thing I use crappy passwords for sites like those.

What version of PHP is everyone using?

prod-web:~$ php -v /bin/ash: php: not found Our new docs team has their own server with some PHP on it for MediaWiki, I have no idea what version or particularly care, as long as it stays away from the mission critical stuff.

I can guarantee you that is not going to include the cPanel license.

    Arin IP Information

RIPE has added a geolocation field to their IP allocations.  I wish ARIN will do the same. One workaround for geolocation in the US could be to set up organization POCs with the address set to the datacenter through a sub-SWIP. Blargh.

All requested providers should now be added.

Latency monitoring of common DCs and hosts

To clarify: Our monitoring activities are using less than 5mbps in aggregate across 1000 hosts.  KuJoe reached out to me in PM and we sorted out the confusion (I believe anyway). (If it took 120mbps to monitor a host we would not be operating this.)

How to gauge the quality of a provider's network

Well... Cogent and HE are both really useful as one-trick ponies that hop off to a peer.  But for example, using Cogent to reach AT&T is really bad right now because of the Netflix dispute (AT&T is deprioritizing Cogent traffic right now). nLayer/GT-T can be useful to supplement for some...

Looking for Xen based Linux VPS

Indeed.  However, it is less trivial to overcommit resources on Xen than it is on KVM or OpenVZ. Xen allows you to overcommit CPU Cores, Bandwidth, etc.  It can also allow you to overcommit memory, and with the LVM overcommit patches, disk as well.  However, both of these require increasingly...

    Joepie91 got a FBI/HTCU raid...

Typically, with cases like these, it's not about finding data, it's about sending a message.  They know that activist groups (and groups pretending, perhaps aspiring depending on who you ask, to be activist groups) encrypt everything. No, the point here is to show everyone else that was...
