May Have to Ditch CrashPlan - No Restores 4 Days a Month

Crashplan sounds unusable where one has TB's of data in there.  Definitely not acceptable situation. Time to shop for alternative.

Alternative Solutions to this (my) problem?

See nothing wrong with your approach. Extensions are a human friendly or should be these days. Most software will open up whatever, read the header info and make determination if it is known filetype.  Not adhering to your whatever filename extension. There is probably some BASH wizard out...

Cloning SD Card for ARM device

Interesting approach.   My first merry go round on this since I always use standard prebuilt stuff that is a download away.   This whole custom built image thing has been frightened that I'll modify something, wipe the OS and image will be fubared..  Cause that's how things work the first couple...

Cloning SD Card for ARM device

About to monkey with a custom bootable SD card for an ARM device.  Got ahold of such part of a gear purchase... The normal dance moves to get this going are more time and patience than I have to spare. Since I am prone to trying stuff and blowing things away, would like to preserve the original...

    Local/in-house virtual servers.

I use Virtualbox regularly on my workstations :)  You know where the noise ratio of the machine is pretty low and proper video card + nice monitor. My rackables, Proxmox :)

    Local/in-house virtual servers.

1U server right? Yeah, you might want to put the server in the garage.  Unless Fran silenced it, typically those 1U 5xxx series are outrageous noise.   So noisy typically you wouldn't want one anywhere in your house.  Like worse than your quad flying noise machine. It's a server.  So Proxmox...

Hungary Proposes New Tax on Its Internet Traffic

Was a heavy insanity tax.  Unsure if the economy of Hungary in shambles to that level.  But, 60 cents per GB would be a great way to keep the country in digital stoneage. All said, 60 cents is a heap... Nothing compared to what cell companies are ripping folks for though ;)

    Automatically provision dedicated servers... how?

I've used Noc-PS as end user.  Dacentec uses it. Rather nice software and it just works. From a customer perspective,  yeah,  I want to see more Noc-ps and similar rather than waiting for datacenter staff to fuss with things and manual install then hand over.   Saves heaps of times.

Bought a P4 back in 2000~2002? Here, have some free money*

Oh class action suit and probably Attorney General of IL refusing to join the suit (i.e. reserving the right to pursue Intel independently for Illinois).... At least that's *typically* why states are opted out.

Bought a P4 back in 2000~2002? Here, have some free money*

You would think there was sort of statute of limitations on the time between the fraud and now. Been ahh 12~ years. Good to see some activity going after this unsavory companies. Red Bull won't give you wings, but most certainly will give you dental decay and mass contribute towards your...

    ChicagoVPS acquires 123systems

Problem with those is they are all deceptive. In traditional tangible world, I can't say I ever see such bold claims.   I call the utility company and presto, they have standard operating hours.   Maybe the cable company has extended, albeit limited hours beyond the normal hours. Everyone...

Whats Your Monthly Mobile Data Use

I probably push 2-3GB a month.   I'd use more, but they want an arm and a leg for such.   So I heavily restrict use unless I must or experience a BW outage like I had happen last month with landline. Still considering Tmobile which would have my use going up since top plan is use friendly...

    123Systems sold again?

The non-legal entity of course ;)  That being the BlueVM unincorporated as an investment of CC/CVPS. Just more Matroshka nesting dolls in Buffalo. As for the incorporation documents @DomainBop... Thanks for the push on that... So I looked. May 27, 2012, incorporation shows two partners in...

    ChicagoVPS acquires 123systems

It's deceptive the practice of lying about support, inferring onshore support, etc. Think about it..  1. You have lowend companies who pretend to have support (your only support is the poorly paid abroad fresher)...  Which usually the support is more of a hazard than a help. 2. You have some...

    ChicagoVPS acquires 123systems

Said it on other thread... 123Systems will get rolled into BlueVM... That's my guess. Not many companies out there, legitimate ones that want the headaches of a lowend VPS company that: 1. Has a terrible reputation 2. Banks sales probably nearly entirely on annuals 3. Has a good year almost...

Dacentec New Price Schemes - Lowers Costs - Rent Only?!

I agree... Always use about 2-3x factor on power for the other related overhead and cooling. Lenoir though, there is no real estate mass inflation and power has to be low there. It's good to look at lesser tier markets like Lenoir from cost side.  Only downside as customer tends to be...

Dacentec New Price Schemes - Lowers Costs - Rent Only?!

Power matters only a bit.  Big picture 5420's are going to eat what?  < 2A most of the time.  Guess I need to find my meter and go test one over the weekend ;)  Been meaning to set up a test environment anyways. 2A = 240 watts. 240 x 720 hours = 173 KwH 173 x 5 cents = $8.65 /mo $103.80 per...

Dacentec New Price Schemes - Lowers Costs - Rent Only?!

At scale and with awareness and at low prices, I'd say so. Other RTO stuff I see is one off folks moving idle misfit stock.  Or people taking their normal dedis and throwing a hefty per month surcharge on for the ownership part. There is plenty of cheap and powerful gear for a song out there...

FTC Sues AT&T for Throttling Unlimited Data Customers Up to 90%

Well I agree the FTC and FCC do little to nothing to properly regulate the cell co's. Definitely as Ald said - old bedmates. Even if it's late and something little, ideally it's a direction of more things to come.
