Linux swappiness - how do you set optimal value?

Good find there and yeppers, off to converting to 1 I go :)   Why? Because I use MySQL quite a bit on many things.  OOM condition with MySQL could be PITA fatal.

Dacentec New Price Schemes - Lowers Costs - Rent Only?!

From an operation like Dacentec, as long as the gear is cheap, abundant and in racks and people buy it, they will continue selling it.  Long term their offer price should only go down.  $50 RTO eventually at $35 RTO. You can pick up 54xx/55xx units loaded in a rack these days for a song...

    Q3 2014 Lowend Provider Results

Well yeah to all that @Francisco. Certainly more to learn in the underlying or under-LYING data as always. Figure they were tired of the pre-release results and general mockumentation of the whole thing. Then of course you have stuff like this for the literates, databugs, auditors, etc: Top 3...

    $1080 income per year  - 800 E3 commodity cost = $280 income pre-other-cost profit $280 / 12 months = $23 a month pre all costs. $23 - power = what's this draw?   50 watts mixed use... probably more... 50 x 720 / 1000 * .05 = $2~ in power @ 5 cents KwH. $21 margin a month. Minus staffing...

Dacentec New Price Schemes - Lowers Costs - Rent Only?!

Question is, does it really cost $1080 for that E3?  $1080 might be a good price in public one off buying currently (I don't buy E3's so no clue). I guarantee they buy used, as they have historically.   They are buying off lease gear. That E3-1230 - it's End of Life by Intel, Q2 2011 release...

Linux swappiness - how do you set optimal value?

I've long ran with swappiness at 0. Unsure what the other values are intending with swapping out to disk.  Disk is slow. Even SSD based stuff. Long considered the overly aggressive caching in Linux, especially in desktop use to be rather broken/aggressive/annoying.

Kimsufi Decides Maybe Forums Aren't The Best Place For Billing Support

Ahh forums-only  or forum pushed support is just a hellacious idea. Communities providing support for a company aren't providing support. You need fulltime staff just to sit in forums and read through just about everything (if you are doing it right). People expect prompt, like hours at most...

    Q3 2014 Lowend Provider Results

Well, this clearly happened in prior quarters with Prometeus I'd say.  Some interesting timing from Ramnode too. (Yep, I like both companies and their services, so no axe grinding, just observing fairly). Such is good marketing big picture.  Some folks might have more limited view of such as...

    Q3 2014 Lowend Provider Results

My sentiments exactly. It's like a popularity survey for soft drinks... You vote Pepsi Cola, I vote Moutain Dew.  They say Pepsi has 2 votes... ehhh say what?

    Q3 2014 Lowend Provider Results

I've long said that averagevote  where it get much above a 2.0 value and where votes cast for said company are >= 10 is good indication of voting irregularities.   Take that how you may ;)

What one should know if planning to start public mail service

Yes limiting per hour and per day will deter the idiots and prove mostly not worth their time. Common tactic employed in most places.

    Q3 2014 Lowend Provider Results

Sure a few people are wondering about the Q3 2014 LE* provider poll results. Like past few I've tallied the numbers.  There are some catches.  I threw a few votes where people couldn't count to 5... I think there were maybe 3-4 voters outright with problems.   Further changes will be factored...

    Yet another ChicagoVPS backup issue

Unhealthy? Come on now. Unhealthy is lying to customers and stealing from folks. Is that how this segment is?  As long as someone is criminally persistent we just rubberstamp them, pat them on the back and say good job? Someone needs to call the idiots out.  If I don't you'll sit here and act...

    Yet another ChicagoVPS backup issue

Listen sweetheart,  I'll keep this simple. Is reinstall not working since you are using Solus version circa 2013?  I get you blame Solus for your hacks and such, BUT, if you are going to use their stuff even under the face mask fronting, you should make sure you are licensed.  Why?  Cause you...

    LET Down?

Oh boy, I was in the corner pretending I didn't see the "CC/CVPS" mention as the employer. Ahh, well, where do we go with this one? Somewhere right now a phone call is being made from New York to California.
