It works for smaller accounts. But those with GB's of mails, its a pain and uses your connection's bandwidth. ImapSync is the best option and you could run it from your VestCP box to sync with the mail account in cPanel. The configuration is pretty simple.

I used to have the nearest OpenNIC IP's set for DNS, but after moving our office, the new connection requires logging into a webpage, that loads only with the default set of DNS they provides. The OpenNIC IP's are not as easy to remember like the Google or OpenDNS. So, I am not caring much...

With git and image hosting, there are so many alternatives and people stick to the ones they like. For Diaspora, if one creates an account, he can connect with all other pods and there is no need to change pod, unless there is some issue. So, I believe it will be more actively used.

No. Each and every pod communicate with one another using open standards. So, you can connect to any person in any pod but just creating an account in one. Moreover, since it uses open standards, it can connect to other networks like Frendica too. I am not so great in writing long sentences...
